Guide · Import
Import your ChatGPT history.
Years of ChatGPT conversations hold decisions, plans and prompts that worked. Living Brain will read them and keep what matters as Markdown pages with sources, private to you unless you choose to share.
Step 1 works today · Step 2 is planned
1. Export your data from ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT on the web, click your profile picture, then Settings.
- Open Data controls, choose Export data, and confirm.
- OpenAI emails you a download link. It expires after 24 hours, so download the .zip soon.
The zip holds every conversation in conversations.json, a readable copy in chat.html, a few small files about your account and feedback, and the files and images you uploaded.
Using a ChatGPT workspace through your company? Personal export may be switched off there, and admins export workspace data instead. Ask your admin. OpenAI's steps can change; their help centre has the current version.
2. Import it into Living Brain Planned
livingbrain import chatgpt ~/Downloads/chatgpt-export.zip
- It reads on your machine. Nothing uploads until you confirm.
- You choose what goes in. A preview lists conversations by date and title. Take them all, a date range, the ones matching a word, or pick by hand.
- Secrets stay out. API keys, passwords, email addresses and phone numbers are redacted before anything leaves your laptop.
- It stays yours. Imported chats go into your personal memory, encrypted with your own key. To share one with a channel or the whole team, choose it explicitly.
- It keeps what matters. The brain writes pages for the projects, decisions and people it finds, adds the prompts that worked to your prompt library, and links every fact back to the conversation it came from.
- Re-importing is safe. Conversations are matched by id, so a newer export only adds what's new.
3. Then delete the zip
The export contains everything you ever typed into ChatGPT. Once it's imported, delete the zip from your Downloads folder and empty the trash.
Also from Claude
Claude's export (Settings → Privacy → Export data) will import the same way: livingbrain import claude ~/Downloads/claude-export.zip. Planned
